Boy Brennin is a semi-historical tale for all ages with some elements of fantasy.

The course of action includes events that to some extent are based on what we know about Celtic culture, rites, and religious beliefs.

The action of the story is set to the century around the birth of Christ. A young Celtic boy, Brennin, and his family elf flee after their village has been attacked and wiped out by a Roman patrol. After several days on the run, they reach another Celtic tribe on the river Danu.

Brennin is admitted as a full member of the tribe. To achieve this, he must undergo the necessary rituals. He hereafter assumes the name Boy Brennin. Since he is forced to interrupt the preparations for his manhood ceremony due to treason, he has to make a human sacrifice to appease the gods.

Boy Brennin is apprenticed to the village druid and, after the druid's death, he takes over the druid's office together with his wife. After a visiting bard has cast a curse on the village, resulting in Boy Brennin's wife and son and a large portion of the villagers' plague and death, he must leave his well-established, secure life and seek refuge by a mythological lake.
